Taiwan Chapter 1: I am here!

Hola amigos, empiezo el recuento de mis vivencias desde la otra punta del planeta.
Viajé con Emirates y la verdad es que lo tienen muy bien montado, tienes pantalla propia con una selección de películas de estreno, así que como casi no duermo en los aviones, me zampé cuatro películas. Sí que se tarda en llegar... Dieciocho horas de vuelo con escala en Dubai, con su extravagante aeropuerto.
Hi folks, this is my first post writing about all my new adventures. I flew with Emirates, and it was a really entertaining flight, they have a good catalogue of films and since I am rubbish at sleeping away from a bed, during the 18 hours I watched around four of them. Here is the exuberant Dubai airport, where I changed airplane.
Aterricé en Taipei Taoyuan a las 5 de la tarde, y me dirigí hacia la estación central en una guagua que te lleva desde el aeropuerto.
Mi primer contacto con la ciudad fue en lo que cargaba la maleta en el vehículo, de la humedad y el calor, ¡se me empañaron las gafas!
I landed at Taipei Taoyuan airport at 5 in the afternoon, and went to the main station in a bus. I had my first contact with the city when I was loading the luggage in the bus and my glasses went all misted up from the heat!
Intercambié mis primeras palabras en chino con el conductor y ocupé mi asiento. Mención especial tiene el tapete que cubre los reposacabeza. Las ventanas están también decoradas con cortinas de ganchillo. Me pasé todo el trayecto sonriendo por la extravagancia...
Encontré fácilmente el hostal donde pasaría la noche, ya que no podía ir directa a la residencia de estudiantes, no dejaban entrar hasta el día siguiente. Pero me vino bien, porque por fin me duché y caí dormida como un ladrillo.
I exchanged my first words in Mandarin with the driver and seated. Please note the amazing embroidery on the seat. The curtains were the same and I was fascinated.
I found the hostel easily and spend a night there, since in the accommodation they didn't allowed checking in until the next day.
Al día siguiente compré una especie de puré de arroz con trocitos de cerdo y jengibre y dejé el hostal para dirigirme por fin a mi uni. Iba cargada con mi maleta sudando por el esfuerzo y los 32 grados, así que al subirme al metro y tomar un asiento, hice lo que bien recomiendan en el metro de Londres, hidratarme, así que saqué mi botellita de agua y tomé un trago.
Entonces mi mirada se posó en un señor mayor que me estaba mirando con cara de muy pocos amigos, y me señaló el cartel encima de él.
Comer y beber en todo el metro, está prohibido bajo multa severa.
Esas prohibiciones las ves en otros países, claro, pero suelen referirse a que no metas una hamburguesa o un refresco, pero es que ni si quiera puedes dar un sorbo a tu agua... Me quedé cortadísima.
On the next day I had a rice porridge with bits of pork and ginger for breakfast and left the city center, carrying my heavy luggage around the MRT (Taiwan tube). I was so sweaty under 32 degrees and because of the humidity that I had to take a sip of water when I sat on the train.
Then I noticed an old man in front of me was glaring at me, and I saw that he pointed a sign of "food and drinks are not allowed", so I put my water away and felt so stupid... In London they always say keep yourself hydrated at all times... I guess that's not the same here.
Por fin cambié a la guagua que te lleva a la uni, y que va recorriendo toda la ciudad, alejándose paulatinamente de los ruidos, hasta cruzar el río y meterse en la zona vegetal y boscosa, que es el distrito Wenshan. Como fui tan estupenda de meterme sin mirar cuántas paradas sería, me dirigí ansiosa a un adolescente, y me enseñó en su app que quedaba bastante, y muy majo, como ya se bajaba, le dijo al conductor donde me quería bajar.
Una vez instalada en mi residencia. Mi habitación estaba vacía y no sabía quién la ocuparía conmigo. Así que me pedí la cama favorita y empecé a organizar ropa. Al rato llegó mi compañera de habitación, una chica de Texas muy extrovertida y que venía trastocada de pasar una época en Japón, así que hablaba a una asistenta que nos traía almohadas en chino, mientras hacía reverencias al estilo nipón. Todo un espectáculo.
Como no conocíamos la zona, fuimos a explorar y buscar un súper. Lo que pasó es que dimos con el más caro, y por una razón, trae cosas de todas partes del mundo, ¡incluído el salmón del mercadona!
Siempre cuesta adaptarse a la alimentación cuando vas a un país nuevo, así que compramos un poco a lo loco y lo básico, esperando encontrar otro súper más barato. Por suerte a las horas lo encontramos...
I took then a bus to the University, it takes a long time, going around the city and then leaving the noise behind to get into the river and the mountain. It's still city but all green and lush.
Since I was all so brave getting in the bus without checking how many stops there were, I asked this young boy and he showed me his map so I could see I could relax for at least half an hour. And he was getting off before me, so he talked to the driver so he could stop where I was going to get off. So nice!
Once in my accommodation, my room was still empty, so I still didn't know who I would be sharing with. I picked a bed I liked and started organising clothes. After a while, my roommate arrived, I was instantly relieved, she was this nice girl from Texas, a little bit confused between Japanese and Chinese customs, since she was coming from a stay in the neighbour Island and therefore flying from Tokio (she's also fluent in Japanese, so lot of respect!). We got along well and we went out to check the supermarkets. The closest one we found is also the more expensive, so I will only go in case of emergency finding something specific.
Al día siguiente, tocó hacer el examen de nivel. Para que nos asignaran una clase. Inocentemente decidimos salir de la residencia con otros compañeros media hora antes, pero sin saber dónde era el test, ya que la web de la uni estaba caída y el campus es gigantesco. Así que nos tocó subir una cuesta montaña arriba que se tarda 20 minutos. Toda esta zona parece las ruinas de un videojuego con templos y junglas, tipo uncharted. La verdad es que íbamos corriendo, sudando, y admirando el paisaje.
On the next day, we had the level test for the language center to place us in different classes. We were naive and decided to leave the rooms half an hour earlier, since the campus is close by. What happened is, the International Building is on the very far side up the mountain. And we also didn't know where it was going to take place because the official website went down the day before... So we were lost and it took us a long time to find out it was taking place in the International Building 20 minutes away. So we ran uphill, sweated and enjoyed the lovely views at the same time.
Por fin encontramos las clases del examen, y fue cuando pasé el momento más frustrante de toda mi vida. Me colocaron el test de lectura y escritura, y me quedé mirándolo como una boba. Entendía cosas, pero entre los nervios de llegar tarde y que había dormido 5 horas, me quedé totalmente en blanco. Ni recordaba cosas básicas para escribirlas... Así que traté de hacer que leía cosas y dejé pasar el tiempo hasta que alguien más entregó su examen y ya me fui.
We finally found our class for the exam. And then I had one of my most frustrating moments in all my life. I was taking the reading and writing test, and I went blank. I could understand bits but with the jetlag and all the fuss of being late, I just couldn't think straight. So I sat there waiting for the time to pass by.
Mis compañeros salieron todos sobrados y yo me sentía tan tonta. Pensando, ¡todo el esfuerzo de venir unos días antes a hacer el test para nada! Pero que no cunda el pánico, al rato fue la entrevista de cinco minutos para ver el nivel de conversación, ¡y lo bordé! Me preguntaron por el clima, de donde venía, qué me parecía la comida de Taiwán... Y eran justo temas sobre los que tengo vocabulario.
Así que hoy puedo anunciar orgullosa que ya salieron las listas y me han ubicado en el nivel básico 3, igual que a mis otros compis, así que ando más motivada. No quería ir a lo básico, así que contenta y el nivel este está bien para afianzar escritura y lectura. De todas formas, si te ubican en un nivel que no te satisface, si lo hablas con tu profesor y ve que no te corresponde, te cambian.
All my friends left the exam way more confident and I felt so down thinking, all the effort of coming a few days earlier to get a nice level for nothing. But fear not! I took the speaking test, an interview with a teacher and I was pleased to be asked about food in Taiwan, the weather and about my country, so I could talk about topics that I can handle.
I can proudly announce that the lists came out and I was placed in similar level as my friends, basic 3, so I am more motivated, since it will be nice to be studying similar materials and also because I 'd rather study a harder level and keep up with it than be in a level in which they go around things I already know. (edit. I went back to level 2, it was way too difficult!)
Relajándonos tras el test. La chica rubia es Stephanie, mi compañera de habitación. Relaxing after the tests, the blonde girl is my roommate Stephanie.
El test fue el lunes, y el resto de la semana, no había nada que hacer, así que hemos hecho gestiones básicas: conseguir una tarjeta sim, comprar cosas para la habitación, utensilios de cocina y hacer algo de turismo, claro.
Hemos visitado el mercado nocturno, probado el tofu apestoso (fermentado) que no nos gustó nada y se ve en esta foto claramente por algunas de nuestras caras.
The test was on Monday and the rest of the week we didn't have anything else to do, so we sorted paperwork and stuff like a sim card, buying things for the room, kitchen appliances, and be tourists of course!
We visited the night market, tried the stinky tofu (nope, nope, nope!) and you can see our faces after it bellow.
Este es el templo taoista más antiguo de Taiwán, y fue muy bonita la visita, aparte de porque es hermoso, porque uno de nuestros compañeros, es de padre indonesio y vive en Londres, donde no hay templos así, así que es la segunda vez en su vida que está en un templo de su religión, y estaba muy emocionado.
This is the oldest taoist temple in Taiwan and it was a really special visit, apart from being gorgeous, because one of our friends, his father is from Indonesia and living in London, where there are no temples, this is his second time in a place where he can worship properly. He was deeply moved.

De camino al metro pasamos por otro templo, y estaban orando, pensábamos que se trataba de alguna ceremonia, pero resultó ser un funeral.
On our way back to the station, we found another temple, they were praying, we gathered around and took pics and it turned out it was a funeral, oops.
El martes fuimos a visitar el Taipei 101, que tiene el ascensor más rápido del mundo, nos pusimos en menos de un minuto ¡en el piso 88!
Vimos las impresionantes vistas desde las alturas. La gigantesca bola de contrapeso que lo equilibra (660 toneladas) en caso de terremoto, y botellas de agua ¡con la forma del edificio!
On Tuesday we visited Taipei 101, where there is the fastest lift in the world, in less than one minute 88 floors already!
We enjoyed the impressive views and admired the giant wind damper (660 tons) that helps balance in case of an earthquake.
Bajamos unos pisos y tenían una exposición de coral, que tallan y se considera un artículo de lujo.
Descubrí un precioso mapa mundi, y comprobé encantada que por una vez, no se habían olvidado de las islas canarias.
A few floors down, there was a polished coral
exhibition, really nice, it is considered a luxury and I found a nice globe and I was satisfied to find the Canary Islands were included (lot of artistic maps forget).
Después investigamos el distrito Xinyi, zona financiera y de ocio, y descubrimos una curiosa tienda de juguetes y cosas del estudio Ghibli.
We wandered around Xinyi district, and discovered a Ghibli studio merchandise shop.
Luego encontramos otra tienda de la aplicación Line.
And then a Line app merchandise shop.
Y esta es una tienda de donuts con formas graciosas.
And this is a cute donuts shop where my friends went crazy.
Hoy vamos a investigar el centro de deportes y la biblioteca.
P.D. ¡Taiwán me encanta! Aun si me mata porque hay gluten por todos lados.
Today we are going to check the sports center and the library.
